About BumpWeek
BumpWeek answers one question: what does having a child actually cost, for you, where you live. The site exists because the question is badly served elsewhere. The most-cited figure for raising a child in the United States comes from a government study last revised in 2015 and is repeated without adjustment; most calculators cover a single country and allow no real customisation; and published guides rarely say which year, which household or which region their numbers describe. A cost estimate that cannot be traced to a source and a date is not worth planning around.
So every figure here carries its origin. The calculators ask where you live, what childcare you intend to use and how you plan to feed, because those three answers move the total more than everything else combined. The guides state what a source measured and what it excludes. Where the honest answer is a range rather than a number, we publish the range.
Who's behind this
BumpWeek is published by Radif Partners. We build calculators and guides on the financial side of having a child, for the United States, the United Kingdom and the Gulf, and we state where every figure comes from rather than asking to be trusted.
How we work
Every number on this site comes from one of three sources:
- Government data and institutional research (USDA, Brookings Institution, ONS, GOV.UK, MOHAP, BLS, IRS)
- Published reports from healthcare and childcare organizations
- Price lists and published tariffs, quoted with the date they were checked
I'm not a doctor. You won't find medical advice on BumpWeek. What you'll find is clear financial guidance for one of the biggest transitions of your life, from someone who's been through it twice.
